aka the Queensborough Bridge—it's the entry point into Manhattan for the NYC Marathon runners. They're talking about renaming it for former mayor Ed Koch. Sorry—I love you, Ed, but we all know everyone's gonna keep on calling it the 59th Street Bridge (ba-da-da-da-da-da-da, feelin' groovy). [You can see more Sunday Bridges here.] |

Weekend Reflections
These folks enjoying a very expensive cup of something at Caffe Florian were probably waiting for the water to recede in flooded Piazza San Marco (which it finally did—the tide comes in, the tide goes out). [See more reflections here, at James' meme.] |

Mosaic Monday
Haven't been to this wonderful meme in a while. But I wanted to share these images of the precious putti I found on a recent trip to Rome. (These were all in the Vatican Museum, where—hallelujah— you are welcome to take all the photos you want.) [You can see more mosaics at Mary's little red house.] |

Weekend Reflections
You're not allowed to takes photos in the Doge's Palace, in Venice. But I couldn't resist sneaking this one—just loved the reflection of the courtyard in this funky window. [You can find more reflections here, at James' meme.] |

Venetian bridge
I'm standing on the Ponte di San Rocco, over the rio de la Frescada. That's the Ponte della Scuola—and the white building is the Scuola Grande di San Rocco (filled with fabulous works by Tintoretto). [See more bridges here, chez Louis la Vache] |

Brooklyn Bridge
This is why I love to walk across early in the morning—I have it almost to myself and I can feel like it really is "my" bridge. [See more Sunday Bridges here, chez Louis la Vache.] |

Verrazano-Narrows Bridge
I've shot this bridge a few times from a plane, but never like this— down below, from a boat. This was taken by my daughter Lila. [See more Sunday Bridges here, chez Louis la Vache.] |

In case you find yourself downtown and hungry in the wee hours, Fishmarket's kitchen is conveniently open until 4 AM. Do you recognize "my" bridge reflected in the window? [See more Weekend Reflections here.] |

Ponte dei Frari
The gondoliere park their boats on the rio below this bridge and hang out here when business is slow. From time to time they'll grab a coffee or a spritz from the cafe. [See more bridges here, chez Louis la Vache.] |

Weekend Reflections
Tried out a Spanish restaurant in the Village recently (and if I could remember the name of the place I'd tell you, 'cause it was pretty good). The candlelit ambience was lovely—and fortunately, I carry a penlight so I was actually able to read the menu! [See more weekend reflections here.] |

another footbridge
This one's in Tribeca, across West Street, about a
block north of Ground Zero. It's used mainly by
the 3,000+ students of Stuyvesant, NYC's premiere
public high school.

footbridge
This one's in Robert Wagner Park, right next to
Battery Park, at the tip of Manhattan—it's a
summer venue for some great music.
(Yes, that's Lady Liberty out there in the harbor.)

This beautiful bridge, by the Castel Sant' Angelo
(just visible on the left) is my favorite in Rome.

One of those things that just give me
pleasure—beautifully polished silver.
No, it's not mine; it belongs to my
cousin with the impeccable taste.

bridge at versailles
Another old photo (i.e., way before digital).
This little bridge leads the way to Marie
Antoinette's "petit hameau" at Versailles,
where she and her attendants would play
at being milkmaids and shepherdesses.

Manhattan Bridge
You might wonder why the photographer
didn't use the bridge as a backdrop. But
he did—only he used the Brooklyn Bridge,
out of view on the left. This little park in
Brooklyn gives you a great view of both.

Ponte Vecchio (2)
Another take on Florence's most
famous (and most beautiful) bridge.
(I can hardly count the number of
times I've been to this fascinating
city, and every single time I have
to take pix of the Ponte Vecchio!)

Pont des Invalides
I think this is a lovely bridge, but it tends
to be overshadowed by the elegant
Pont Alexandre III, just upriver—not to
mention the Grand Palais at its Right
Bank end and the golden dome of the
Invalides nearby on the Left Bank.

Weekend Reflections
Not so easy to get a clear picture at

figured it was worth a shot! We were
coming up to the Staten Island Ferry
terminal at the tip of Manhattan.

footbridge
But you're not allowed to walk on it—it's
strictly for decorative purposes. It's part
of the carefully thought out Japanese
garden at the Brooklyn Botanic.

2 Things Challenge: master/control
This is Stubby (for his Manx-like tail).
He is the Master of all he surveys (i.e.,
my apartment). But he's more of a
jungle cat than a housecat, and most
definitely in Control of his territory
(and all those who share it with him)!

Venice has the best reflections, and they're not
always in the water. This shiny surface reflects
a palazzo or two across the Grand Canal.

Mosaic Monday
My mom's next-door neighbors waited four
years for their little girl, and were finally
able to travel to China and bring this
beautiful child home about 5 months ago.
She's just so bright and happy now. I'd say
she was worth the wait, wouldn't you?

The Williamsburg Bridge
Not a sexy as the Brooklyn Bridge, or even the
Manhattan Bridge, this one still pulls its weight
—as you can see from this shot taken at rush hour.
When it was built (1896–1903), it was the longest
suspension bridge in the world (and it held that
record for 21 years, until the Bear Mtn. Bridge was
completed in 1924).

How about a detail? Even two weeks
after Carnevale, the evidence of the
revelry still litters the Accademia
Bridge in Venice.

2 Things Challenge: savory/sweet
Are you familiar with the sweet jazz and savory
lyrics of the wonderful Mose Allison?
I tried to upload a little video that I took recently
at a free concert here in NYC, but no luck. But
check this out (from 35 years ago).
Weekend Reflections
This one is courtesy of my daughter Lila,
whose birthday is today. She and her
sister traveled to Peru last month—and
spent a few days on this lake in the
rain forest.

Verrazano-Narrows Bridge
Once or twice when I've flown down to Virginia
(which I did the other day), I've been lucky
enough to get this view of the country's
longest suspension bridge—almost three
miles including the approaches, and the
center span is 4,620 feet (just 420 feet
longer than the Golden Gate).
That's Brooklyn at the top, Staten Island
at the bottom.

Ponte Vecchio
I imagine that everyone who goes
to Florence hikes up to Piazzale
Michelangelo and takes this exact
picture of the Ponte Vecchio, with
the Santa Trinita, alla Carraia, and
Amerigo Vespucci bridges beyond.
But, of course—who could possibly
resist such a view? (This is probably
#1 in a series—I have many, many
pics of this beautiful bridge!)

they've dried, so I haven't tossed
them yet).

a bridge with no name
This one's in Italy's Cinque Terre. My
friend Lori (that's her) and I were on
the trail from Manarola to Corniglia
(visible in the background). Think I
got this shot just in time—after I
took the picture, some kids ran onto
the bridge behind me and began to
make it sway like crazy!

Weekend Reflections
This guy was stuck in traffic in the middle of the
Brooklyn Bridge. Those of us on the pedestrian
walkway above didn't have that problem—though
it can happen there too. New York gets millions of
visitors and sometimes it seems as though they're
ALL on the bridge at the same time (usually when
I'm there too & just trying to get home). :~}
