The 52 Photos Project

The prompt for Week 11:
The honey of the fields—what's in bloom?

Well, last month down in the Virginia delta, it was weeds.
But I was glad the owners of the field behind this house
chose not to mow—whatever their motivation
(or lack thereof)—because all those yellow flowers
looked so pretty, especially to a city girl like me.

52 Photos Project

The prompt for Week 37:
One photo from the 1st day of 2014

I'm down in Virginia horse country, and this
morning I went to visit some old  "retired" friends.
I could just see them thinking, "Hey, isn't that
the woman who brings us peppermints?" . . .

and then realizing, "Yes, it is!"

52 Photos Project

The prompt for Week 15: fresh

I (literally) just got back from a four-day break
with friends and family down in Virginia.
They sent the city girl out to the garden to fill
the blue basket with whatever was ready to pick.
Here's what I came back with—and they were perfect!

Weekend Reflections

All I need is sunscreen, a fishing pole,
and a big glass of sweet tea—my favorite
spot at the river is ready and waiting!

The prompt for Week 48: distance

This pretty road is in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley,

where I escape to spend time when I can with good friends
and family.  This spot is less than 350 miles from
New York City, but in terms of the change in my stress level

(from über-high to super-chill), it's a world away.

Weekend Reflections

Went to church with friends I was visiting
near Charlottesville, VA. Have to admit that
although the service was lovely, I was more than
a little distracted by this beautiful reflection.
I did at least wait until the church had emptied
out before slipping back in to take this shot.

Weekend Reflections

Just visited friends who recently renovated
an old farmhouse—part of a property that
has a name rather than a street number.
It's not a fancy house, but everywhere you
look there's something beautiful to see.

52 Photos Project

The prompt for Week 35:
The Road I Travel

Well, it's not exactly the road I travel on
a daily basis, but just about a week
from now I'll leave the madness
of Manhattan and head down to Virginia
to celebrate the New Year with friends
and relatives in the peaceful
Shenandoah Valley (where I took

this shot at this time last year).

52 Photos Project

The prompt for Week 26: golden

And we've reached the halfway mark already!
For this one, I just had to choose these
jars of honey, complete with the honeycomb,
that I shot at a farmers' market in Virginia.

52 Photos Project

The prompt for Week 19:  We make, we create,
but where do we start? What elements
or ingredients do you gather to begin?

I'm not a good cook, but my cousin Kay is.
When I go down to Virginia, sometimes she makes
popovers for breakfast.  She gets up early and sets the
ingredients out so they can reach room temperature.
Eggs, milk, butter, salt, flour—mix them together,
put
them in the oven, hold your breath, and voila:

Popovers + butter + jam = heaven on a plate!

Weekend Reflections

When I was down in Virginia recently, I stopped
with some friends to admire this pretty
little mid-19th-century church and the cemetery
around it. The church was closed but
we were able to peek in the windows.

Weekend Reflections

Almost didn't take catch this reflection,
because my camera's battery had just died.
I think maybe I should use my phone more often.

Weekend Reflections

It's the end of a hot summer day, we're
back in a safe harbor, and the sun
is definitely over the yardarm.

Prompt for Week 9: Summertime Colors

Just in time for this challenge, I traveled
to Virginia last week and found this
colorful collection of kayaks and canoes
in a creek off a river off Chesapeake Bay.

Sunday Bridges

The other day I was reminiscing about encountering
loooong freight trains down in Virginia when I was
a kid.  Came across this one when I was there last week—
fortunately, we didn't have to wait as it rolled slowly by.

52 Photos Project

The prompt this week: a new beginning—
capture one moment in time from this day.
I've been out in the (mostly Internetless) country for the
past 4 days and didn't see the prompt until I got home
just after midnight tonight. I was in airports and
on planes most of the day, but on the way to the
airport I stopped at a very cool shop and my eye
went directly to this chest. I just think it's beautiful, and
I'd love to be able to create something like this myself.

52 Photos Project

The prompt this week: along the fence.
I can almost guarantee that if you walk along
a fence in Virginia horse country, you will
make a friend—especially if you carry
peppermints in your pocket!

Weekend Reflections

One of those things that just give me
pleasure—beautifully polished silver.
No, it's not mine; it belongs to my
cousin with the impeccable taste.

Weekend Reflections

It's almost 11 pm, and still close to
90°F. Really wish I could jump in
this pool right now!

Twigg Bridge, Virginia

AKA the Piankatank Bridge, because
it crosses the Piankatank (where, as
the locals will tell you, the frogs all
jump from bank to bank) River. In
the Virginia delta, more than 150
rivers, large and small, flow into
the Chesapeake Bay.
