52 Photos Project

The prompt for Week 52—"like silk"

Actually, I have some silk peonies, and
they
look very much like this real one.
Well, maybe not quite as beautiful.

The prompt for Week 51: "simplicity"

Just coming into bloom this past Sunday,
the first tulip of the season was a
creamy white—and very simple—one
called 'Sweetheart'.

The prompt for Week 40—"before and after"

I guess this is actually before, during,
and after—but this tree peony was
just so gorgeous in full fabulous bloom!

The prompt for Week 5:  The light arrived
and opened like a rose garden

I took Pablo Neruda's inspiration (via Bella)
somewhat literally.  This photo captures the light
filtered through the wisteria leaves that frame

the entrance to my favorite rose garden.

The prompt for Week 51: petals

Very soon, we'll be able to enjoy this—
which will be followed by ...

this.  But that's the nature of ... nature, right?

The prompt for Week 47: a place I'd show you in my town

Aside from all the things there are to see in Manhattan,
I'm pretty proud of my own borough, Brooklyn.
I would definitely take you for a stroll through my
"backyard," the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.
Maybe you'll come when the Bluebell Wood (all

40,000+ bulbs) is in full fabulous bloom!

Weekend Reflections

In the Japanese garden at the Brooklyn Botanic,
the leaves on this weeping tree were only
just staring to turn yellow a couple of weeks ago.
Mostly, though, the whole scene was still green—even the lake.

Weekend Reflections

The water lilies may be my very
favorite end-of-season flowers at the
botanic garden.  BTW, the building that's
also reflected here is an apartment complex
they named Ebbetts Field because it was built where
they tore down the home of the Brooklyn Dodgers.

The prompt for Week 5:  waterdrops

Bella chose a good theme for this week.
Pretty much all I had to do was go out in the
garden and find a waterlogged flower
—and there were plenty to choose from.

The prompt for Week 2—"microscopic"

Faced with this challenge, I went on a quest
for the sweetest, eensy-teensiest flowers I could
find at the botanic garden—and here they are:
perfect beauties at +/-  a quarter-inch across.

Weekend Reflections

The cherry trees were putting on quite
a show last weekend in the Japanese
Garden at the Brooklyn Botanic.

Weekend Reflections

This is the Palm House, a big glass conservatory
at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, seen here reflected
in the lotus pond.  It's a wonderful event space,
especially in the evening when the garden is
closed to the public. I've been to a friend's wedding
here, and two high school graduations (my kids').

The prompt for Week 47: light

I took this picture at the botanic garden the
day before we switched over to Daylight Saving.
I wouldn't be able to take the same shot now,
because when the light is like this, the
garden will be closed.  Timing is everything.

A Perfect Pink Peony

This is a tree peony—they'll be blooming in my
local (and very close-by) botanic garden in
about three months. Well worth the wait!

The prompt for Week 37:  Softly Fade Away

I like the idea of one year fading
softly into the next, and I knew the
garden would be the place to
find just the right image to
convey that feeling.  I hope that
2013 blooms well for you!

Prompt for Week 11: A Different Path

I came across this sign while walking through a
public garden, and my first thought was, "No, thanks!"
If I had stayed on the path, I never would
have gone to live in Europe, or raised
my kids in a loft in Manhattan, or made a
midlife career change—or started blogging.
And I can't wait to see what the next
diversion from the path brings!

Prompt for Week 5: pink

This was a hard one—too many choices!
I finally decided on the
Brooklyn Botanic
Garden's beautiful cherry blossoms —Mother
Nature outdid herself with this pink perfection!

Project 52—"details"

A peony in full fabulous bloom is truly a
beautiful thing.  But I also like to capture them
when their petals begin to fall and you can
appreciate how they're made in fine detail.

Today's Flowers

Once again I have to say that
I have no idea what these bright
pink blooms might be—maybe
someone can tell me—but
aren't they fun?

Sunday Bridges

We got our first snow of the year yesterday,
and I took a walk in the botanic garden—
and crossed this pretty little stone
bridge over a frozen stream.
